August Wilson was an African American playwright that was born in 1945. August’s main goal in writing plays was to enlighten people about African American life in the 20th century. What he did was write a series of 10 plays, known as The Pittsburgh Cycle, all set in different decades to show the African American experience in the 20th century. They were very positively received and two of the plays were even given the Pulitzer Prize. But, before becoming a playwright, August was in the Army, but dropped out quickly and realized  that it wasn’t for him. Wilson was married three times in his life, and would have one child with his first wife, and one child with his third wife, who we died married to at the age of 60 due to liver cancer. August had a great impact on African American culture. In Pittsburgh there is a  August Wilson Center for African American Culture, and in the Broadway theatre district there is a theatre named after him, and it is the first theatre to have an African American name. August Wilson was a great playwright that had a large sphere of influence on the African American community.
